A Professional Engineering Fraternity
Seeking Admission to Theta Tau
Currently, the Sigma Gamma chapter of Theta Tau offers opportunities for admission during the Fall and Spring semesters of the University of Rhode Island’s school year. To be elidgible for admission, an applicant must be pursuing a degree from one of our ABET accredited engineering majors: Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Ocean Engineering.
Seeking admission to Theta Tau is divided into two parts: Rushing and Pledging.
Rushing: In the first couple of weeks of each academic semester, Theta Tau has a “rush period”, where the fraternity will host a number of events to raise awareness and interest for the fraternity. Some of these events from the past have included an open house, barbaque, “speed rushing”, game day on the quad, and others. At the end of the rushing week, all who are interested will be able to schedule an interview with the brotherhood, where we will ask the candidate a series of questions to further our knowledge about them. The brotherhood will then conduct a meeting where we will choose a number of candidates to recieve “bids”, which brings us to the next step in the admission process.
Pledging: Once a candidate is extended a bid and they accept it, they begin the pledging process of Theta Tau. This part of the process is typically seven to ten weeks in length, consists of weekly meetings with a group of brothers who will be in charge of a sort of pledge education, with the goal of imparting knowledge of the fraternity’s history and values, unique bonds with each and every active brother, and a group of new friends from their own pledge class. Pledging is a completely dry process, and hazing of any sort is absolutely prohibited. At the end of this process, if the brotherhood finds the candidates an excellent fit to the brother hood, the pledges will be individually extended the offer of brotherhood to Theta Tau Chapter Sigma Gamma.
