Specific degree requirements for each College of Engineering (COE) major can be found here. The information is organized by major and then by graduating class year.
Note: Once admitted to the University, the first curriculum sheet that you are eligible to follow is the one for the first academic year (catalog year) in which you matriculated (are enrolled in a degree program) at URI. For example, if you matriculated at URI in fall 2016 or spring 2017, the first curriculum sheet you can follow is for the Class of 2020 (academic year begins 2016, so class year is 2016+4=2020), which follows the 2016-2017 catalog year. You cannot follow an earlier check sheet (e.g., Class of 2019, 2018, etc.).
URI Freshmen and Transfer Students in University College (UC)
University of Rhode Island freshmen, and some transfer students (depending on credits transferred), begin their academic careers in UC, where they are advised until they meet the requirements for admission to a degree-granting college. Answers to many frequently asked questions about UC advising may be found on the UC website.
Requirements for admission to the COE are as follows:
Effective Fall 2014 (Class of 2018 and beyond)
“To be admitted to the COE, students must complete at least 24 credits (including transfer credits) with a grade point average of 2.00 or better, and must also complete the following required courses with a grade point average of 2.00 or better and a grade of “C-” or better in each course: CHM 101/102, EGR 105, EGR 106, MTH 141, MTH 142, PHY 203/273, and either PHY 204/274 or CHM 112/114.” [2014-2015 University Catalog]
Effective Through Summer 2014 (Class of 2017 and earlier years)
“To be admitted to the COE, students must not only complete at least 24 credits (including transfer credits) with a grade point average of 2.00 or better, they must also have completed 20 credits from the following list of required courses with a grade point average of 2.00 or better: CHM 101/102, EGR 105, 106, MTH 141, 142, PHY 203/273, and either PHY 204/274 or CHM 112/114.” [2013-2014 University Catalog]
All engineering students in UC are advised by an engineering advisor, who holds advising appointments in Roosevelt Hall. Students schedule advising appointments through e-Campus. The advisor routinely reviews the student’s academic transcript at the end of each semester to determine eligibility for admission to the COE.
Once a student has been officially admitted to the COE they are assigned a permanent engineering advisor in their major and are notified of this in writing by the COE assistant dean.
Current URI Students: Changing Major to Engineering
The above GPA and course requirements apply to all current URI students pursuing majors in another URI college (no longer in University College) who are seeking admission to the COE.
URI Students Returning for a Second B.S. Degree in Engineering
The above GPA and course requirements apply to all URI students wanting to return for a second B.S. degree majoring in an engineering discipline who are seeking direct admission to the COE.
The above GPA and course requirements apply to all transfer students who are seeking direct admission to the COE. This is in addition to other University Admission requirements for transfer students.
